Norton Disk Doctor

Occasionally, the Macintosh will crash, and when it does, it leaves the filesystem on the hard disk in a state of disarray. That is why it's a good idea to run Norton Disk Doctor frequently to prevent situations where you will no longer be able to boot your machine. Follow these steps to keep your Macintosh happy.

Start up with the supplied Macintosh Performa 6214CD CD-ROM. For instructions on doing this, see page 72 in your Macintosh Performa User's Guide. A shortcut for starting up with the CD-ROM drive is:

  • Insert the CD-ROM.
  • Restart or turn on the Macintosh.
  • Hold down the "C" key on the keyboard until you see "Welcome to Macintosh".

Insert the floppy disk labeled Norton Disk Doctor.

Double-click the Norton Disk Doctor application to run the program.

Select one of the two volumes on your hard disk.

  • system
  • experiment

Click the examine button to check your filesystem. If there are any problems, there will be dialogs on the screen asking you what actions to take. In most cases, you will click the "Fix" button to repair the problem. Occasionally, you will be informed of problems that cannot be fixed. In these cases, you should write down the file list displayed so you can examine the files or applications for any problems at a later time.

After checking the volumes, quit the program and restart the Macintosh. Don't forget to remove the CD-ROM from the drive. You can hit the CD eject button as the computer restarts. Dragging the CD-ROM to the trash will not eject the disk if it is the startup disk.
