PsyScope
Extensions Manager
The Extensions Manager Control Panel should always be set to the PsyScope set before running any PsyScope experiments.
The purpose of the PsyScope Set is to turn off Control Panels and Extensions that may interfere with the timing and operation of the button box. Turning off some Controls and Extensions does not necessarily change the current settings of the system (see Setting Up: Memory and Setting Up:Monitors to make changes to those settings).
If you do not have a PsyScope extensions set in your Extensions Manager, you can create one by selecting "New Set" or "Duplicate Set" from the File menu with the Extensions Manager window showing.
When you create a PsyScope set, it is easiest to turn all extensions off by selecting "All Off" from the Edit menu. On older versions of Extensions Manager, this may be located in the File menu. From that point, you can turn on individual items. If you do not have items listed, just ignore them.

Note: Each version of the Mac OS has a different version of Extensions Manager and along with it, a different set of extensions andcontrol panels, so it is likely that you will have extensions that are not listed above. This list was composed using the extensions set shipped with Mac OS 7.6.
Standard Extensions Set (Using Your Macintosh for Other Programs)
If you use the same experimental Macintosh for running other applications, you should create an Extensions Manager set named Standard. To do that, select "New Set" or "Duplicate Set" from the File menu. In most cases, you can choose "All On" for the Standard Set. This will allow you to use any programs that you may have installed on your Macintosh.
In some cases, you may also need to turn virtual memory on (see Setting Up:Memory Control Panel).
If you turn on virtual memory to run larger applications (MacPerl, Microsoft Word, etc.), remember to turn it off before running any PsyScope experiment. See Setting Up:Memory for more information.
Note: Always run Microsoft Word, Excel, ot PowerPoint with the Standard Set turned on. If you don't, the entire package will be re-installed and you will need to restore the PsyScope as described below.
Installing Software
When installing a software package, you should always switch to the Standard Set, restart, and then install the software. In many cases, software packages install additional extensions and control panels which will be added to the PsyScope Set. After installing a new software package, you should switch to the PsyScope Set and turn off any extensions that were not in the original PsyScope Set. |
