Accessing Volumes From A Macintosh
Long-term storage of files on the desktop computers is not encouraged due to the frequent upgrading and relocation of the computers. For permanent storage, you should store files in your own account and the other "public" folders on the central CRL file server. Please remember that files stored on the desktops should be considered temporary. Although they are backed up regularly, it is likely that folders of files will be removed to free up disk space.
| To access the CRL server, select Chooser from the Apple menu. |
 |
| Click AppleShare.
If you are not on our physical network, there will be no file servers to choose from. In this case, click the Server IP Address... button and skip to "Enter the Server Address" below.
Otherwise...
Make sure CRL is selected in AppleTalk Zones.
Select CRL in the list of file servers.
Click OK.
Skip to "Connect to the file server..." below. |
 |
| If you are not on the UCSD network will need to connect to our file server by typing in the name shown here after clicking the Server IP Address... button.
Click Connect.
Note: you can still do this even if you are on the UCSD network. |
 |
| Enter your username and password in these fields. The name and password is the same as your e-mail username and password.
If you are a research assistant or 199, please contact your supervisor on which account and password to use.
Click Connect. |
 |
| The list of available network folders will be displayed. This list will vary from user to user depending on access levels.
Click the name of the folder you want to access. Your account will be listed here and is private only to you. All others are shared by several users. Some folders are available to some accounts and not others. You can shift-click multiple items if you want to access more than one. Then click OK. Please do not check the checkboxes.
Most lab resources are in the lab folder. You can store temporary items in tmp. The tmp folder is an ideal way to transfer files and folders from one account to another without having to use floppy or zip disks. Just remember that items stored in tmp will be deleted if their modified dates are older than 20 days. Files that have modified dates more than 20 days ago will be deleted after one day. |

When you select an item from the list, its icon will appear on your desktop. Just open this up as a normal folder. |
When you are finished using a network folder, drag the item to the trash can. This is similar to dragging a disk icon to the trash can. It will remove the network folder from the desktop and will log you off. Make sure you drag all mounted network folders to the trash. Otherwise, you will not be completely logged off and someone else will be able to gain access to your private files.
| Once you access a network folder by going through the Chooser as shown above, a shortcut (alias) will be created within the Recent Servers in the Apple menu. Just choose the item that you want in the submenu. |
