Accessing Volumes From Windows

Here's how to access the various network folders for accessing lab documents and saving your own public or private files. These are instructions for Windows on our local network.

To log in with your username and password to access network folders, choose Log Off... from the Start menu.
Click Yes in the dialog that appears.
Enter your username and password here.

If you press Esc at this Window (known as a guest login), you will only have access to printing and the tmp folder, described below.

If you accidentally press Enter at this screen without entering a valid password, you will not be able to print. In this case, log back off and enter a valid username and password or press Esc at this login window.

There are several ways to access the network folders. One is to click the CRL shortcut on the desktop or in the Shortcuts bar.
You can also browse the folders using My Network Places on the desktop.

Note that this is the only way you can access the tmp folder if you have logged in as guest (by pressing Esc at the login window).

The list of available network folders will vary from user to user depending on access levels.

Most CRL lab resources are in the lab folder. You can save items in your own private folder named with your own username. You can store temporary items in tmp. The tmp folder is available on any desktop (Windows and Macintosh) to anyone, even if you are using a guest login. This is an ideal way to share files with other users between machines.

Be sure to log off when you are finished using a computer, otherwise your files (including your mail) will be visible to everyone! To log off, select Log Off... from the Start menu (as shown above).
