Printing posters on UCSD's HP DesignJet T1100ps printer

Adobe Illustrator Guide

These are instructions for Adobe Illustrator CS4 (version 14) running in Windows 7. Other versions of the program and operating system may vary from the examples shown.

Suggested poster size: ARCH E (36" x 48" portrait or 48" x 36" landscape)

Click on the sample poster to download it. This one is pre-formatted for ARCH E (landscape).

The printer cannot print to the edge of the paper. Do not place any text or graphics all the way to the edge of the poster except for a background color/image.

TIPS:

1. The printer cannot print to the edge of the paper. Do not place any text or graphics all the way to the edge of the poster except for a background.

2. When scaling images, always hold down the shift key while dragging the corner handles so the images maintain their aspect ratio. Never drag the side handles unless you want to intentionally stretch your images horizontally or vertically.

Define your artboard size

Start from an existing poster file or create a new file.

Remember that the paper rolls only come in 36 inches and 42 inches wide, so one of these values should always be used for either the width or height.

Print your poster to a Postscript file

You must already have the printer driver installed for an HP DesignJet T1100ps printer. Instructions for that are located elsewhere in this online documentation.

To print your poster to a postscript file, choose Print... from the File menu.

For Printer:, choose cplot1.

Click General.

In the Media section, choose the appropriate paper size and orientation. In this case, we are printing a rotated (landscape) poster and it is the standard ARCH E size. For any other custom sizes, pop up Custom for the Size: and type in your Width and Height values.

Tip: Remember that for a landscape poster, the page is rotated, so the width and height values will be swapped.

In most cases, if you designed your poster at actual dimensions, you will not need to scale or fit your poster to fit the paper.

Finally, if you set up the printer to print to a file only, you will be offered a save as dialog. Name your poster file and save it on the Desktop so you can access it easily. This is a temporary file, and you can delete it after you have printed your poster successfully.

Upload your Postscript file to a UCSD ACMS printing account

Now that you have your Postscript file, you need to upload the file to a UCSD ACMS printing account.
