Getting Durations with SE16 Label Info & MacPerl
SE16 Label Info is a drag & drop utility that will grab durations from SoundEdit 16 format sound files (those with the SE16 icon).
Download the utility by clicking the icon on the right.
To install the program, double-click SE16 Label Info.sea. When prompted for a destination folder, choose Applications (Mac OS 9). |
 |
|
To use this utility, you must already have MacPerl (version 5.6.1r1 recommended) installed on the Macintosh.
Open up your folder of sound files. Select a group of files and drag them on top of the SE16 Label Info icon. Make sure the icon highlights or all the sound files will be moved into the SE16 Label Info folder!
Lift up on the mouse when the SE16 Label Info icon highlights. |
 |
After a brief moment, a window will open up listing your files followed by the track name (mono files will have one track, usually named "Track 1") and the duration, in milliseconds, of the sound.
Note: These names are not necessarily in alphabetic order.
If nothing happens after dragging your sound files on SE16 Label Info, you might be selecting too many files to process at one time. Select a smaller group (1/2, 1/4) of sound files. |
 |
Save this text file using File->Save.
You will be prompted for a filename. In this example, it is named "durations.txt".
Click Save.
If you selected a subset of sound files due to the memory problem described above, continue dragging the remainder of your sound files on SE16 Label Info and save additional text files (with different names) until all sound files are processed. When all sound files have been processed, choose Quit from the File menu. This will quit MacPerl which automatically runs when you use SE16 Label Info. |
 |
To work with your saved text file, open Excel. Then choose Open... from the File menu. If you cannot see the file in the folder in which you saved the file, make sure you set the file type to text. Choose tab as the delimiter character, and you will see three distinct columns. Remember to sort by name because the items are not necessarily alphabetized. |
