Natually Occurring Cell Death
Strong evidence that much cell death is regulated by events in the local environment.
Trophic Factors (e.g. Nerve Growth Factor):
1. Present at connection sites.
2. Quantities are limited.
3. To access trophic factors, cells must make connections and those connections must be active.
4. Cells that make the best, most active connection win the competition for these limited resources.
