About Us

We are part of the Center for Research in Language (CRL), which involves researchers from different departments and different programs across campus. Our group's focus is sign language, and currently we are interested in two areas: new sign languages and gesture. We study how languages come into being, grow and acquire grammatical structure and complexity, and how new sign languages compare with other sign languages. We also study both hearing and deaf people using gesture with speech or with sign language with the goal of understanding the role of the visual-manual modality in learning.
