Recent PhD !!!
Congratulations to Dr. Nicole Wicha on completing her graduate studies in the Cognitive Science Department! Nicole was advised by Marta Kutas and Elizabeth Bates and defended her dissertation in June... Fortunately Nicole is not leaving us immediately. She has been awarded an INC postdoctoral fellow traineeship for the next year.

The Linguistics department will be hosting West Coast Conference on Formal Linguistics (WCCFL), a prestigious annual conference in the field. Please visit the conference website for more information.
Elaine Lamb, Kate Pappas, and Judy Weir received career development funds from the Staff Equal Opportunity Education Program of UCSD for the 2002-03 year. Congratulations Elaine, Kate and Judy !
The Linguistics department welcomes a new member, professor Grant Goodall, who will be moving to UCSD from the University of Texas, El Paso. Grant holds a Ph.D. in Linguistics from UCSD and he is one of the most prominent figures in the study of Spanish syntax and in methodology of second language acquisition. Grant will be taking over the directorship of the Linguistics Language program from professor Sanford Schane.
Congratulations to Maria Polinsky for receiving an NSF grant to study cross-linguistic variation in Control structures. This will be a joint project with Eric Potsdam (from the University of Florida), and a new graduate student, Shin Fukuda will be working on the project as well. The project also involves fieldwork on little described languages, Malagasy (Madagascar) and Rutul and Tsaxur (Dagestan, NE Caucasus). The project will contribute to an understanding of Control structures in natural language and provide a database of such constructions for other researchers.
Recent or upcoming conference presentations
CRL at IASCL-SRCLD: Several CRL affiliates presented their work at the Joint meeting of the International Association for the Study of Child Language and the Society for Research in Child Language Disorders in Madison, Wisconsin this July. JDP students Barbara Conboy, Janet Calderon and Shannon Rodrigue were among those presenting posters reporting research carried out in collaboration with Donna Thal, Vera F. Gutierrez-Clellen, Elizabeth Bates, and others.
CRL People
Summers in CRL are always busy, with visitors coming in from all over the world to work on various projects. This summer's visitors included Simonetta D'Amico, Elena Andonova, Daniella Perani, Stefano Cappa, Anna Szekely, Stephen Wilson, Ken McRae, Luise Purini, and Mary Hare. Kow Kuroda, who is a visitor working with Jeff Elman will stay in CRL until the end of December.
